Lecture by Professor Kim Taeman on the 27th
"Marine Education Standards Begin in Busan"
Amid a sense of crisis that "things cannot continue as they are," a new educational model proposed by Pukyong National University and a blueprint for marine education to shape the future of Busan, the "marine capital," were discussed at the National Pukyong University colloquium.
The Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS, Director Kim Changkyung) at National Pukyong University held a colloquium titled "Marine Education in Busan, the Marine Capital: What Should Be Done?" on the 27th at the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business Administration Building.
This event was organized to discuss what marine education strategies Busan should develop in anticipation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries relocating to the city. Experts, researchers, and graduate students attended to discuss the region's role and new directions in marine education.
On this day, Kim Taeman, Professor in the Department of East Asian Studies at Korea Maritime and Ocean University and former Director of the National Maritime Museum, delivered a lecture emphasizing the need for a "paradigm shift in perception" regarding marine education.
He pointed out that although the marine sector has emerged as a core area determining national competitiveness in various fields such as climate crisis response, changes in global logistics, and energy transition, Korean society's perception of the sea remains limited.
Professor Kim stated, "A change in how we view the sea must come first for education to change. Busan, where the sea, city, history, and culture are closely interconnected, is in an optimal position to design a new model for marine education."
The Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences at National Pukyong University, which organized this event, has established itself as a hub for marine education research by continuously conducting studies such as the Korea Maritime Foundation's research on marine education and marine culture policy, the RISE project Moonshot initiative, and research on marine ecology and marine culture literacy.
The institute is also working to concretize a "Busan-style marine education model" through collaboration with local schools, institutions, and civil society, raising expectations for synergistic effects in policy and education as the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries relocates to Busan.
Kim Changkyung, Director of the Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences at National Pukyong University, stated, "For Busan to become the marine capital, marine education is just as important as marine policy. We will further expand our role as a central research institution in establishing marine education standards that encompass both the region and the nation."
