Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Fire Safety Headquarters conducted a joint civil-government-military training exercise to strengthen ship fire response capabilities at around 10 a.m. on the 25th near the 3rd pier of Seogwipo Port.

This training was implemented in response to the growing need for practical drills, as a total of 31 ship fires occurred at ports and harbors in the province over the past five years, resulting in the loss of 37 vessels and property damage amounting to approximately 4.5 billion won.

The exercise was designed to reflect the complex nature of ship fires as multi-faceted disasters. Participants included Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters, Seogwipo Maritime Police Station, the Navy Mobile Fleet Command, the Association of Fishing Vessel Owners, and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives. A total of 76 personnel and 17 pieces of equipment from the civil, government, and military sectors were mobilized.

The training scenario simulated a real-life situation in which a fire broke out on a fishing vessel and spread to nearby ships due to the issues of overcrowded and closely moored vessels.

The exercise focused on mastering real-world response procedures, including responding to fire spread between vessels, real-time inter-agency communication drills using PS-LTE, and the separation of burning vessels in close mooring conditions. These procedures were carried out as they would be in an actual emergency, thereby strengthening the joint on-site response capabilities of civil, government, and military teams.

Park Jinsu, Chief of the Fire Safety Headquarters, stated, "Due to factors such as high vessel density in ports and strong winds, ship fires can cause damage to spread rapidly. We will continue to conduct customized training that takes into account the specific characteristics of ship fires in order to build a safer port environment."

The Fire Safety Headquarters plans to further expand practical training exercises that reflect the unique characteristics of Jeju and to strengthen cooperation systems with related agencies to enhance disaster response capabilities.
