Meeting Held with Presidents of 80 Shopping District (Alley-Type) Merchant Associations
Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, emphasized that "shopping districts and alley-type commercial areas are more than just places for consumption-they are the heart of local communities and the backbone of the regional economy, supporting the lives of citizens." He added, "We will focus all of the city's capabilities on strengthening the competitiveness of these commercial districts and creating a sustainable commercial ecosystem, so that small business owners and merchants can regain their vitality."
On November 14, Mayor Lee held a 'Shopping District (Alley-Type) Revitalization Meeting' with the presidents of 80 shopping district (alley-type) merchant associations in the main conference room of the former Chungnam Provincial Government building.
This meeting followed a previous gathering on October 14 with the presidents of 28 traditional market merchant associations. It is significant in that Daejeon City continues its on-site communication efforts to strengthen the overall competitiveness of local commercial districts, including traditional markets and shopping districts, and to expand support for merchants.
The meeting was organized to directly listen to the voices of the field and to discuss practical support measures with merchants, as part of Daejeon City's ongoing efforts to revitalize local commercial districts and enhance the competitiveness of small business owners.
During the meeting, the current status of Daejeon City's support programs for small business owners was shared, and in-depth discussions were held on the challenges and suggestions unique to each shopping district.
The merchants voiced concerns about difficulties on the ground, such as reduced consumption due to the economic downturn and labor shortages. The city responded by stating that it would continue to implement tailored support policies to address these issues.
Daejeon City plans to further expand regular communication channels with merchant associations and to establish self-sustaining commercial district revitalization models that connect the unique characteristics of each shopping district with local resources.
