Twice Speaker of the House
Clashed with Trump
Nancy Pelosi, the first and only female Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, has announced that she will not run in the House elections next November, marking her retirement from politics after more than 40 years.
According to the Associated Press and other sources on November 6 (local time), Pelosi declared in a video address to voters in her district of San Francisco, California, that she "will not seek re-election."
Pelosi is expected to conclude her political career in January 2027, when her current term ends.
At age 85, Pelosi is regarded as one of the most influential female politicians in American history. She entered politics in 1987 at the age of 47 and led the Democratic Party as House Minority Leader for 20 years beginning in 2003. She served as Speaker of the House twice, from 2007 to 2011 and from 2019 to 2023.
She played a leading role in passing the Affordable Care Act (healthcare reform) and the resolution on Japanese military “comfort women.” She was also credited as a key figure in the Democratic Party's victory in the election on November 4.
Pelosi is well known for her adversarial relationship with President Donald Trump. As Speaker during Trump’s first administration, she frequently clashed with the President. While serving as Speaker, she presided over the House’s approval of two impeachment articles against Trump on charges including incitement of insurrection, sending them to the Senate in 2019 and 2021. She is also widely known for the so-called "sarcastic clap" during Trump’s 2019 speech and for tearing up his State of the Union address behind him immediately after his 2020 speech.
President Trump called Pelosi "Crazy Nancy," while Pelosi, in a recent CNN interview, publicly criticized Trump, calling him "the worst thing on the face of the Earth."
On the day of Pelosi’s retirement announcement, when reporters asked President Trump about her decision in the White House Oval Office, he responded, "She is an evil woman," and added, "I think her retirement is a great contribution to the country."
