Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, announced the 2050 carbon neutrality vision for Jeollanam-do at the 33rd Korea-Japan Strait Coastal Provinces and Prefectures Governors' Meeting held in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province on November 1, 2025.

The Korea-Japan Strait Coastal Provinces and Prefectures Governors' Meeting is a forum for eight regional governments-Jeollanam-do, Busan Metropolitan City, Gyeongsangnam-do, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Nagasaki Prefecture, Fukuoka Prefecture, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and Saga Prefecture-to discuss the development of the Korea-Japan Strait coastal region and solutions to shared challenges. This international conference has been held annually without interruption since 1992.

This year, under the theme of "Carbon Neutrality Policies for Achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," participants exchanged a variety of opinions aimed at promoting friendly cooperation between Korea and Japan and fostering regional development.

During the meeting, Governor Kim introduced Jeollanam-do’s "2050 Carbon Neutrality Vision," which includes four core strategies: transitioning industries to low-carbon models and building a renewable energy ecosystem; leading Korea’s energy transition; expanding carbon sinks such as blue carbon and green carbon; and fostering a culture of green living practices.

Governor Kim stated, "Achieving carbon neutrality is by no means an easy task, but if the Korea-Japan Strait region shares wisdom and experience and stands in solidarity, we can open a sustainable future together." He added, "By leveraging the region’s strengths in renewable energy and blue carbon, Jeollanam-do will become a hub for achieving carbon neutrality in Northeast Asia."

Meanwhile, Jeollanam-do plans to strengthen its cooperation network with local governments in Korea and Japan through the Korea-Japan Strait Coastal Provinces and Prefectures Governors' Meeting and to expand technological and policy exchanges for achieving carbon neutrality.
