After the launch of Japan's new cabinet, the foreign ministers of South Korea and Japan held their first meeting in Gyeongju on October 29.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Cho Hyun held talks with Motegi Toshimitsu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the occasion of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Foreign and Trade Joint Ministerial Meeting held in Gyeongju. The two ministers exchanged views on bilateral relations, issues concerning the Korean Peninsula, regional and global cooperation, and other matters of mutual interest.
Both ministers agreed that the importance of South Korea-Japan relations is growing amid the current grave international situation. In particular, they noted the significance of holding a foreign ministers' meeting soon after the launch of Japan's new cabinet. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that both sides agreed to make joint efforts to enhance the quality of substantive cooperation between the two countries through active communication at all levels and to ensure the stable development of bilateral relations.
The two ministers also exchanged views on issues concerning the Korean Peninsula and ways to strengthen regional and global cooperation. Minister Cho explained the South Korean government's policy toward North Korea, which aims to usher in a new era of peaceful coexistence and joint growth on the Korean Peninsula through the easing of military tensions and the restoration of trust.
