Subcontractor Worker Dies at Pangyo Office Construction Site
Company Issues Statement on Day of Accident, Pledges "Measures to Prevent Recurrence"
On October 29, Samsung C&T Construction & Engineering Group issued an apology regarding the fatal accident involving a worker at the Pangyo office construction site. The company announced that it would immediately halt work at all sites, including the scene of the accident, and conduct an urgent safety inspection.
On this day, Samsung C&T Construction & Engineering Group released a statement under the name of CEO Oh Secheol, saying, "We pray for the deceased and express our deepest condolences and sincere apologies to the bereaved family. We also bow our heads in apology to all those concerned for failing to fulfill our fundamental responsibility for worker safety."
At around 7:50 a.m. on October 29, a worker in his 60s, identified as Mr. A, who was employed by a subcontractor, died while working at the construction site of the PSM Tower at 641 Pangyo, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province, which is being built by Samsung C&T. Mr. A was working on the sixth basement level when he was struck by a reversing excavator and died as a result.
Samsung C&T stated, "The company immediately reported the accident to the relevant authorities and is cooperating fully with the investigation. We have suspended work at the accident site and at all construction sites nationwide, and have begun special safety training and urgent safety inspections."
Samsung C&T added, "Although we have always regarded 'safety as the top management principle' and have done our utmost in safety management, we reflect on our shortcomings in failing to prevent such accidents. Together with on-site workers and partner companies, we will identify the root cause of the accident and promptly establish measures to prevent recurrence."
The company further stated, "All executives and employees deeply feel the responsibility for this accident, and we will do everything possible to ensure that such incidents never happen again."
Samsung C&T also disclosed that on this day, the police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor inspected the accident site and that measures to prevent recurrence will be established. The Seongnam Regional Employment and Labor Office ordered a work stoppage for some sections of the site.
