The National Police Agency announced on October 29 that it has revised the 'Crime Victim Protection and Support Guide' and newly produced a 'Braille Guide for the Visually Impaired'.
The Crime Victim Protection and Support Guide introduces the rights that victims may have during criminal procedures such as police and prosecution investigations and court trials, as well as victim protection measures such as temporary and provisional orders, and tools like smartwatches and intelligent closed-circuit television (CCTV). It also includes various victim protection and support measures such as economic support (relief funds, medical expenses, and living expenses), psychological support (emergency psychological care at Smile Centers and psychological counseling interpretation services for foreigners), and legal support through free legal consultations provided by the Korea Legal Aid Corporation.
In particular, the revised edition has been produced in a Q&A format that addresses frequently asked questions from crime victims in the field, thereby improving understanding of the system. Additionally, a perforated Braille booklet for the visually impaired has been produced, with 4,800 copies distributed to investigation teams nationwide, including criminal, investigative, women and youth, and traffic investigation units.
The National Police Agency plans to actively utilize the Braille guide during investigations involving visually impaired crime victims, ensuring that they can fully understand their rights and the protection and support systems available to victims in criminal procedures on an equal footing with those without disabilities.
An official from the National Police Agency stated, "We will continue our efforts to ensure that crime victims receive prompt and accurate guidance on their rights and the protection and support systems available to them during criminal procedures."
