On October 23, President Lee Jaemyung ordered all relevant ministries to work together and respond with full force to international crimes such as scams, drug trafficking, and cyber gambling.
Kang Yujeong, spokesperson for the presidential office, stated in a written briefing that President Lee personally presided over the "Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime Response" that afternoon. He said, "As seen in the recent Cambodia extradition case, transnational crimes are destroying people's lives, and if left unchecked, the social costs will increase rapidly."
The meeting was convened to develop urgent countermeasures against transnational crimes that threaten people's livelihoods, such as the Cambodia scam case. Attendees included representatives from the National Intelligence Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Office for Government Policy Coordination, prosecution and police, Financial Services Commission, National Tax Service, and Korea Customs Service.
Spokesperson Kang said, "The government will form an integrated consultative body with agencies such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Financial Services Commission, and National Intelligence Service, and will also establish a 'Special Response Headquarters for Transnational Crimes.'"
Previously, at a cabinet meeting on October 21, President Lee had also addressed international voice phishing crimes, stating, "We should not respond in the usual way, but rather take extraordinary measures."
