Agreement Signed with Dreamline for Telecommunication Facility Construction
Leveraging Urban Railway Infrastructure to Propel Busan as a Global Data Hub
Busan Transportation Corporation (President Lee Byungjin) is accelerating its efforts to transform Busan into a "digital hub city" by integrating urban railway communication infrastructure into the construction of private global telecommunications networks.
On October 21, the corporation signed a "Telecommunication Facility Construction Agreement Utilizing Urban Railway Sections" with the telecommunications specialist company Dreamline.
Through this agreement, the corporation will actively participate in the "JAKO Project," an international submarine cable network construction initiative connecting Korea and Japan by utilizing the underground communication conduits of the urban railway.
The "JAKO (Japan-Korea) Project" is a large-scale initiative to install a submarine cable approximately 245 kilometers long, linking Busan and Fukuoka, Japan.
The main objectives are to enhance data transmission efficiency between the two countries and to strengthen the stability and diversity of global telecommunications networks. In particular, it is drawing attention as a key infrastructure to efficiently handle the rapidly increasing international data traffic resulting from the expansion of the AI and cloud industries.
The urban railway communication conduits owned by Busan Transportation Corporation serve as a citywide underground infrastructure, ensuring stable operation even under adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain or cold spells. Additionally, since there is no need for road excavation, construction periods are shortened and costs are significantly reduced, while minimizing the impact on the city’s appearance. Thanks to these advantages, Busan’s urban railway network is regarded as the "optimal solution" for establishing backbone communication networks within the city center.
With this agreement, the corporation expects to attract optical cables to the urban railway communication conduits, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of the region’s telecommunications infrastructure and contributing to financial soundness through the efficient use of its assets.
Lee Byungjin, President of Busan Transportation Corporation, stated, "Urban railway communication conduits are the optimal infrastructure for ushering in the era of ultra-connected submarine cables," adding, "This agreement serves as a model case of combining public infrastructure with private telecommunications networks and will be an important turning point for Busan to become a global center for the data and AI industries."
