Marco Rubio, Secretary of State under the Donald Trump administration, will visit South Korea for the first time since taking office.
According to the State Department, Secretary Rubio will visit Israel from October 22 (local time) to October 25, followed by visits to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Tokyo, Japan; and Gyeongju, South Korea, from October 26 to 30.
During his trip to the three Asian countries, Secretary Rubio is scheduled to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and related meetings, as well as events during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Week.
This visit by Secretary Rubio to the three Asian countries appears to be part of the itinerary accompanying President Donald Trump on his regional tour. President Trump will attend the ASEAN Summit and then visit Japan and Gyeongju.
This will be Secretary Rubio's first visit to South Korea since taking office as Secretary of State in the second Trump administration, which began in January. During his stay, he is expected to meet with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Presidential National Security Advisor Wi Sung-rak.
Meanwhile, the State Department stated that Secretary Rubio plans to support the implementation of the Gaza Strip peace initiative during his visit to Israel.
