MOU Signed with Samsung Electronics for XR Technology Collaboration
Demonstration of On-Site Applications for Ship Inspection and Design
Advancing VR-Based Training and Inspection Systems
Samsung Heavy Industries is accelerating the digital transformation of shipbuilding by utilizing Extended Reality (XR) technology.
On October 22, Samsung Heavy Industries signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation on XR technology development with Samsung Electronics. At the Galaxy XR showcase event held the same day, the company unveiled for the first time how XR technology is being applied to ship inspection work.
The released video shows a worker wearing Galaxy XR inspecting the engine of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, rendered in 3D, using passthrough and hand tracking functions in a virtual space. The technology has evolved to the point where it can replicate the actual shipyard environment in XR, enabling design verification and maintenance simulations.
This collaboration was initiated when Samsung Heavy Industries pre-validated the integration of its in-house developed virtual reality (VR) solution with Galaxy XR. Since 2018, Samsung Heavy Industries has implemented VR technology for shipyard worker safety training and drawing review work. In July, the company also supplied a VR solution for crew training to Evergreen’s headquarters in Taiwan, expanding the development of customized products for clients.
Through this MOU, Samsung Heavy Industries and Samsung Electronics plan to expand their cooperation to include new product design and development, joint branding and promotion, and the exploration of next-generation business areas. Samsung Heavy Industries intends to further advance its XR solutions by integrating multimodal artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance video see-through, and real-time rendering technologies.
Lee Dongyeon, Executive Vice President and Director of the Shipbuilding & Offshore Research Institute at Samsung Heavy Industries, stated, "Through this collaboration, by combining Samsung Electronics’ XR technology with Samsung Heavy Industries’ field solution and content development expertise, we will accelerate the realization of smart shipyards and strengthen our competitiveness in ship manufacturing."
