Dongducheon City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Park Hyungdeok) announced on the 13th that it is actively promoting the 'Elderly Transportation Expense Support Project' to ease the burden of public transportation costs for residents aged 70 and older.
This project expands upon the existing G-PASS card, which provides free subway rides for seniors, by reimbursing fares for metropolitan area public transportation such as city buses and GTX trains through local currency or cash.
All citizens aged 70 and over are eligible for support of up to 240,000 won per year, regardless of income level. Seniors without a driver's license can receive reimbursements of up to 360,000 won per year.
According to the city, out of approximately 15,700 residents aged 70 and older, about 5,100 have applied for the transportation expense support project. This represents around 32% of all eligible seniors. The city plans to strengthen its promotional efforts so that more seniors can benefit from the program.
The city will carry out on-site promotions and application guidance by visiting senior centers and welfare facilities, with local administrative welfare centers taking the lead. In addition, individual notifications will be provided via phone calls, text messages, and mail.
A city official stated, "The Elderly Transportation Expense Support Project is an important policy that guarantees mobility rights and alleviates financial burdens," adding, "We will make every effort to promote the program so that more seniors can enjoy its benefits."
