Following the recent incident in which a Korean university student died in Cambodia, police are now searching for individuals in their 20s from Gwangju who have gone missing after traveling to Southeast Asia.
According to the Gwangsan Police Station in Gwangju on October 13, a missing person report was filed by the family of a 20-year-old individual, referred to as A, in August after they lost contact with them.
Through immigration records, police confirmed that A had departed for Thailand two months ago and are currently tracking their whereabouts. The family suspects that A may have crossed from Thailand into Cambodia and has submitted relevant records to the police.
In particular, the family received a call from an unknown number during which A reportedly said, "Save me," before the call was disconnected, raising concerns about possible involvement in a crime. The police plan to work with relevant agencies and departments to determine A's location.
The Bukbu Police Station in Gwangju is also investigating after receiving a report from the family of a man in his 20s, referred to as B, who has not been in contact after traveling abroad. The police confirmed that B departed for Cambodia in April and have requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to verify his overseas residency status, but have not yet received a response.
B is known to have frequently traveled to Southeast Asia and other regions in the past and reportedly did not use a mobile phone while abroad. The police are working to determine B's whereabouts and will also investigate any possible connection to recent crimes that occurred in Cambodia.
