Tilly Norwood Nears Agency Contract as AI Actress
"AI Is a New Tool, Not a Replacement for Humans," Advocates Say
The debut of Tilly Norwood, the world's first artificial intelligence (AI) actress, has sharply divided opinions within the entertainment industry. On September 28 (local time), entertainment media outlets such as Variety reported that Tilly Norwood, an AI actress unveiled by British actress, comedian, and producer Elin van der Velden, is receiving offers from agencies and is on the verge of officially entering the entertainment industry.
Previously, van der Velden stated during a panel discussion at the Zurich Summit, an industry event held as part of the Zurich Film Festival, "The AI actress Tilly Norwood is attracting interest from several talent agencies." Tilly Norwood is an AI actress created by Studio Xicoia, a subsidiary of the AI production company Particle6, founded by van der Velden.

Van der Velden remarked, "As recently as February this year, the general reaction to Tilly Norwood was, 'This is nothing; nothing will come of it.' However, starting in May, the response began to change. Within the next few months, we will see which agency will represent her." She continued, "We want to make Tilly Norwood the next Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman. People are realizing that creativity no longer has to be limited by budget constraints. Once these barriers disappear, AI can truly become a positive tool. Ultimately, it's all about changing perspectives," she emphasized.
Following AI Singers, Now AI Actors... Industry Reaction Remains Cold
Tilly Norwood began her acting career by appearing in the comedy sketch "AI Commissioner." Following the emergence of AI singers, AI actors are now seeking opportunities to enter the Hollywood market. However, industry insiders remain cold to the idea. Some actors have even publicly criticized the development. Melissa Barrera, a member of the acting community, stated, "If you are an actor represented by the agency that takes on this AI actress, I hope you all leave that company. It's utterly disgusting." Kiersey Clemons exclaimed, "What's the name of that agency?" Former child actress Mara Wilson also pointed out, "This AI woman is a composite of the faces of hundreds of young women in real life. Why not just hire one of them?"

As the controversy over Tilly Norwood has sparked heated debate not only among actors but also among the general public, van der Velden released a statement saying, "Tilly Norwood is not intended to replace humans. Rather, she is a creative work and a piece of art." She added, "As with many forms of art, the very fact that it provokes debate demonstrates the power of creativity." In conclusion, she emphasized, "I see AI not as a replacement for people, but as a new tool or brush. Animation, puppetry, and computer graphics opened up new possibilities, but never took away the value of live acting. In the same way, AI is simply another way to imagine and tell stories. I, too, am an actor. Even AI characters cannot take away the joy and value of human performance."
