Completion Ceremony for "Ulsan Hydrogen Power Unit 2" Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Plant on September 29
World's Largest By-product Hydrogen Fuel Cell (80 MW) Power Generation Project Progressing Smoothly
Ulsan City is taking the lead in the eco-friendly energy generation market together with Lotte SK Enroute.
On September 29 at 10:30 a.m., Ulsan City and Lotte SK Enroute will hold the completion ceremony for "Ulsan Hydrogen Power Unit 2" at the petrochemical complex in Nam-gu, with Ulsan Mayor Kim Dukyum, co-CEOs Kim Yonghak and Gil Homun, and other company officials in attendance.
Currently, Lotte SK Enroute is pursuing a hydrogen fuel cell power generation project with a total capacity of 80 MW, including three 20 MW units (totaling 60 MW) within the Ulsan petrochemical complex and two 10 MW units (totaling 20 MW) on the site of Lotte Fine Chemical in Yeocheon-dong, Nam-gu. The project is on track for completion by the end of next year.
The power plant being inaugurated at the ceremony is one of the three 20 MW units in the Ulsan petrochemical complex. It will produce approximately 173,000 MWh of electricity annually, providing a stable supply to about 40,000 households (100,000 people) through Korea Electric Power Corporation.
Unlike conventional thermal power plants, this eco-friendly facility generates electricity through a chemical reaction using hydrogen as fuel, resulting in zero carbon emissions. It is expected to contribute significantly to Ulsan City's carbon neutrality goals.
In particular, Ulsan's strength lies in its ability to secure a stable supply chain by utilizing by-product hydrogen generated at local industrial sites.
Mayor Kim Dukyum stated, "Ulsan has led the industrialization of South Korea, and now it is transforming into an eco-friendly energy city that leads carbon neutrality and energy transition. We will continue to actively attract various renewable energy and eco-friendly power generation projects to improve energy self-sufficiency and establish a stable power grid."
Ulsan City is the largest hydrogen production city in the country and a key hub of the hydrogen industry. It is accelerating the creation of a hydrogen industry ecosystem based on its industrial hydrogen pipeline network.
The completion of Lotte SK Enroute's hydrogen fuel cell power plant is expected to further strengthen Ulsan's eco-friendly energy transition policy.
