It has been found that the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic Technician certification is the most effective qualification for middle-aged and older adults preparing for a second career. It ranked at the top in both employment rate and job stability.
On September 28, the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training announced the results of an analysis of employment outcome data for 240,000 unemployed individuals out of 510,000 people aged 50 to under 65 who obtained national technical qualifications. The purpose of this survey was to determine whether acquiring a certification actually leads to employment for middle-aged and older adults, and how it affects their ability to maintain a job.

According to the analysis, 54.3% of those who obtained the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic Technician certification, which involves work related to refrigeration and air conditioning systems, succeeded in finding employment within six months. Other certifications with high short-term employment outcomes included Energy Management Technician (53.8%), Forestry Technician (52.6%), Elevator Technician (51.9%), and Electrical Technician (49.8%).
The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic Technician certification also received the highest evaluation for job stability. Following this were the Energy Management Technician, Elevator Technician, Forestry Technician, and Electrical Technician certifications, all of which were found to help increase the effect of job retention.
In terms of starting monthly salary at the first workplace, the Tower Crane Operator Technician certification ranked highest. Middle-aged and older adults who obtained this certification earned an average monthly wage of 3.69 million won, followed by Drilling Machine Operator Technician (3.26 million won), Bulldozer Operator Technician (2.95 million won), Crane Operator Technician (2.84 million won), and Rebar Technician (2.84 million won).

When comprehensively considering employment rate, wages, and job stability, the Energy Management Technician certification was identified as a promising qualification. It ranked second in employment rate, second in job stability, and sixteenth in wages, showing balanced results across all categories.
To support the acquisition of promising certifications, the Ministry of Employment and Labor plans to significantly expand the scale of specialized training for middle-aged and older adults at Korea Polytechnic University from 2,800 people this year to 7,700 people next year. Kwon Jin-ho, Director General of the Integrated Employment Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Employment and Labor, stated, "Many middle-aged and older adults have been discouraged by a lack of information when trying to obtain certifications," adding, "We hope this announcement will help those seeking a fresh start."
