En Route to New York via Beijing
First North Korean Delegate to Address UN in Seven Years
Kim Sun-kyung, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of North Korea, who is known to be a high-ranking official dispatched to the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, arrived in Beijing, China, a stopover, on September 25.
According to diplomatic sources, Vice Minister Kim Sun-kyung and the North Korean delegation arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport at 11:18 a.m. (local time) on an Air Koryo flight from North Korea.
Previously, NK News, a U.S.-based media outlet specializing in North Korea, reported, citing United Nations sources, that North Korea would send a delegation to the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, and that Vice Minister Kim is scheduled to deliver a speech on the last day of the high-level session, September 29.
In 2014 and 2015, then Foreign Minister Ri Su-yong attended the United Nations General Assembly, and from 2016 to 2018, then Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho represented North Korea at the event.
However, since the 'Hanoi No Deal' summit between North Korea and the United States in 2019, Ambassador Kim Song, North Korea's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has been delivering speeches without the attendance of a separate high-level delegation. This will be the first time in seven years that a representative directly dispatched from North Korea will deliver a speech at the United Nations.
