Identifying the Causes of the Hacking and Data Breaches
Prime Minister Kim Minseok will review the response to the recent large-scale hacking incidents that occurred at KT and Lotte Card.
The Office of the Prime Minister announced on the 21st that Prime Minister Kim will hold an 'Emergency Situation Review Meeting on Hacking Incidents at Telecommunications and Financial Companies' at 10:30 a.m. on the 22nd at the Government Complex Seoul.
At the meeting, Prime Minister Kim will receive a comprehensive report from relevant ministries, including the Financial Services Commission and the Personal Information Protection Commission, on the scale of the damage and the progress of the response.
The meeting will focus on identifying the circumstances surrounding the hacking and data breaches, preparing countermeasures, and reviewing whether there were any issues with the companies' responses.
Previously, at KT, unauthorized small payments were made through illegal base stations, resulting in 362 victims so far. At Lotte Card, hacking led to the leakage of member information for 2.97 million people, amounting to approximately 200GB of data. Among these, it is reported that for 280,000 individuals, information such as resident registration numbers, card numbers, and Card Verification Code (CVC) numbers was also leaked.
