Gangwon Dormitory Celebrates 50th Anniversary, Over 6,000 Alumni
Established in 1975, Korea’s First Regional Dormitory in Seoul

Gangwon Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) announced on the 21st that the 50th anniversary ceremony for the establishment of Gangwon Dormitory was held successfully on the 20th at the Miraegwan Hall of Gangwon Dormitory (Gwanak) in Gwanak-gu, Seoul.

The ceremony was attended by Kim Jin-tae, Governor of Gangwon Province; Park Sooncheol, President of the Gangwon Dormitory Alumni Association (Attorney at Jipyung Law Firm); Choi Yeongeun, President of Yemac's Power (CEO of Mentos Power); Kim Hakcheol, Director of Gangwon Talent Institute; as well as over 150 alumni and current residents of Gangwon Dormitory, making the event a memorable occasion.


In his commemorative speech, Governor Kim Jin-tae (Chairman of Gangwon Talent Institute) stated, "Fifty years ago, when Governor Park Jongseong was in office, this dormitory was established as the first of its kind in the country." He continued, "With the efforts of President Park Sooncheol and more than 6,000 alumni, including a former Governor of the Bank of Korea, Gangwon Dormitory has become a powerful institution." He added, "This year, we invested 2.3 billion won to renovate the facilities, and we are planning a new construction and relocation in the future. I hope Gangwon Dormitory will continue to be the best in the nation."


In his welcome speech, Park Sooncheol, President of the Gangwon Dormitory Alumni Association, said, "Talented individuals from Gangwon Dormitory have become the foundation for the development of Gangwon Province. Let us prepare together for the next 50 years and contribute to the advancement of our hometown, which is our foundation."


Participants watched a commemorative video reflecting on the 50-year history of the dormitory, reviving cherished memories.


The event also included an awards ceremony to honor those who have contributed to Gangwon Dormitory and the cultivation of local talent. The 'Proud Gangwon Dormitory Alumni Award' was presented to: Hong Seonghan, CEO of BC World Pharm, in the Challenge category; Lee Juyeol, former Governor of the Bank of Korea, in the Success category; and Hwang Dongju, CEO of ET Link, in the Gratitude category. Yemac's Power and An Cheolsun received plaques of appreciation, Ham Seokgeun, former Executive Director of Gangwon Talent Development Foundation, received a plaque of merit, and Kim Byeonggi, Head of Management Strategy at Gangwon Talent Institute, received a commendation. Jeong Hyeyeon and Jo Yunyoung, both alumni, were awarded the Proud Young Alumni Award.


Meanwhile, the Gangwon Dormitory Alumni Association has donated more than 640 million won in scholarships to date and has continued to give back to their hometown, including a recent donation of 37,000 bottles of water to help overcome the drought in the Gangneung area.


During the event, a plaque of appreciation was presented to Governor Kim Jin-tae for his active support in nurturing local talent, including this year's investment of 2.3 billion won to fully renovate the aging dormitory facilities. In addition, alumni members donated 30 million won in scholarships collected through fundraising efforts.
