Younghyun Jeon: "Leading Change with AI-Based Technologies"... Samsung AI Forum Held

Held on June 15-16: Each Day Led by DS and DX Divisions
Discussion on Vertical AI Strategies and Vision in the Semiconductor Industry
Preparing Technologies for the Era of "Agentic AI" in Device Business

Younghyun Jeon, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics' Device Solutions (DS) Division, emphasized that "Samsung Electronics is developing foundational technologies that enable easy and fast application of AI technologies across various work domains, making them accessible anytime and anywhere." He made this statement during an academic and technological exchange event with leading global scholars in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), aimed at establishing future strategies for the AI era.

During his opening speech at the Samsung AI Forum (SAIF) 2025, held on the 15th at 'The UniverSE' training center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, Vice Chairman Jeon stated, "This will be a meaningful occasion to bring together experts representing both industry and academia to discuss how AI technology is transforming society and industry, and to share our collective wisdom."

The first day's event was hosted by the DS Division (semiconductors), while the second day will be organized by the Device eXperience (DX) Division as an online session. On the first day, discussions focused on "Vertical AI Strategies and Vision for the Semiconductor Industry."

Yoshua Bengio, Professor at the University of Montreal in Canada, delivered the keynote lecture, explaining potential risks in existing AI models such as "human control avoidance" and "malicious use." He introduced a new model, "Scientist AI," designed to serve as a safeguard. He emphasized, "The Scientist AI model provides answers based on verified facts and data, without any intention to mimic or please humans," adding that it is crucial for both safety and accelerating scientific discovery.

Amit Gupta, Vice President of Siemens EDA, gave a lecture on "The Future of AI-Based Electronic Design." He stressed the importance of integrating AI into semiconductor electronic design automation tools, explaining, "To fully leverage the potential of AI, an end-to-end system that operates across the entire workflow is necessary."

In a technical session featuring Yongho Song, Vice President and Head of the AI Center at Samsung Electronics DS Division, Seokhyeong Kang, Professor at POSTECH, and Ilchul Moon, Professor at KAIST, the latest research achievements and future prospects in semiconductor design and manufacturing were discussed. Vice President Song predicted, "AI will contribute not only to chip design but also to overcoming technical limitations in manufacturing."

At the "Samsung AI Researcher Award" ceremony held that day, three recipients were selected: Nicholas Papernot, Professor at the University of Toronto in Canada; Rose Yu, Professor at UC San Diego; and Lerrel Pinto, Professor at New York University. The awardees also delivered on-site lectures.

The second day of the forum, taking place on the 16th, will be hosted by the DX Division under the theme "Beyond Generative AI, Toward Agentic AI." Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence systems capable of making autonomous decisions and performing tasks independently. Kyunghun Jeon, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Samsung Electronics DX Division and President of Samsung Research, stated, "Generative AI has already become an essential tool in both daily life and across industries," and added, "We will prepare technologies that offer real-world benefits in the era of Agentic AI."

The keynote lectures on the second day will feature: Joseph Gonzalez, Professor at UC Berkeley and a leading authority on language models and AI agent research; Subbarao Kambhampati, Professor at Arizona State University and an expert in autonomous planning and decision-making in AI; and Stefano Ermon, co-founder of Inceptive and Professor at Stanford University, who introduced Diffusion Language Model (DLM) technology.

During the technical session, Samsung Research will share its latest R&D achievements, including: AI technology for automatic camera color temperature adjustment; efficient large language model training techniques and application cases using knowledge distillation; on-device technologies for embedding large language models into electronic products such as smartphones and TVs; and AI technology that generates dubbing voices in actual human voices.
