Over 30 Billion Won Spent, Yet Rainwater Leaks... Yeosu Citizens Disheartened by Museum Opening Delay

According to Yeosu City on September 10, a leakage recently occurred from the ceiling of the museum, which was completed in Yi Sun-sin Park in Ungcheon-dong.

Due to recent rainfall, water leaked from the ceilings of the museum's office and entrance lobby, causing some of the wallpaper to peel off. Buckets have been placed throughout the building to catch the water. There was a previous leakage in April, which was repaired at that time.

The museum was originally scheduled to open this month, but its opening has been postponed to March next year.

The city plans to inspect the site with a professional organization and have the original contractor carry out repairs. However, if circumstances do not allow, repairs will be assigned to another company, and the city will consider pursuing indemnity claims and other legal actions.

The museum was constructed with a total project cost of 31.7 billion won, featuring one above-ground floor and a total floor area of 5,605 square meters. It is equipped with two permanent exhibition halls, a special exhibition hall, a children's experience room, a seminar room, and storage facilities.

Since 2019, the city has been purchasing and collecting donations of artifacts with historical and cultural value from the region, securing more than 16,600 items to date for the museum's opening.

Major artifacts include a ten-panel folding screen depicting the training of the Joseon Three Provinces Naval Forces, titled "Sugunjoryeondo," a painting called "Palsapumdo" illustrating the eight gifts Admiral Yi Sun-sin received from Emperor Shenzong of Ming, the "HMS Audacious Logbook" kept by British naval sailors during the Geomundo Incident, the "Gwiseondo," "Palsapum Doseol," and the "Ichungmugong Jeonseo," a collection of Admiral Yi Sun-sin's records including the "Nanjung Ilgi."
