Gwangjin District Eases Parking Shortages by Constructing Public Parking Lots

Expanding Public Parking Lots in Gwangjin District
833 New Spaces Added in Three Years
Temporary and Private Parking Solutions Also Implemented

Gwangjin District in Seoul (Mayor Kim Kyungho) announced on September 7 that it is taking the lead in alleviating parking shortages by expanding parking facilities. Although the residential parking lot supply rate in Gwangjin District stands at 119.8%, ranking sixth among Seoul’s autonomous districts and considered relatively good, the district still receives a comparatively high number of parking-related complaints.

Since the start of the 8th popularly elected administration, the district has worked to increase parking facilities closely tied to daily life and to enhance residents’ convenience. The number of public parking spaces increased from 1,660 in 2022 to 2,493 as of September this year, an addition of 833 spaces. This marks a 50% increase in just three years.

Four new public parking lots have been constructed. Starting with 81 spaces at the Guui 2-dong Complex Government Building in June last year, 94 spaces were added at Baenamuteo Park in Junggok 3-dong in October. This February, 164 spaces were built at the Seoul 50 Plus Eastern Campus, and in July, 170 spaces were completed at the Jayang 4-dong Traditional Market parking lot.

Three temporary parking lots were also created on unused land. In Junggok-dong, 180 spaces were provided on the site of the Hwayang Substation, 118 spaces at the site of the Pediatric and Adolescent Clinic, and 25 spaces on the grounds of the closed Hwayang Elementary School, all for the convenience of local residents.

The district has also consistently pursued the “Wall Demolition Parking Lot Project.” During the 8th administration, 82 parking spaces were created at 68 locations, increasing parking facilities in residential areas. In addition, the district actively identified private parking lots that could be opened to the public, securing 611 spaces at 53 locations.

In Junggok-dong, the district is accelerating efforts to expand parking by adding 90 spaces through the Ginkgo Lane Overpass Project and 288 spaces through the Junggok-dong Public Parking Lot Complex Development Project, for a total of 378 new parking spaces.

Mayor Kim Kyungho stated, "We will continue to expand parking facilities to create a pleasant living infrastructure and drive local development. Going forward, we will do our utmost to further improve the parking environment, resolve parking shortages, and enhance residents’ convenience."
