Two South Koreans Among 16 Killed in Lisbon Tram Derailment
Authorities Confirm Identities of Eight Victims
Investigation Underway as Five Remain in Critical Condition
On September 4 (local time), AP and AFP reported that a tram funicular derailment in downtown Lisbon, Portugal, resulted in the deaths of 16 people, including two South Koreans.
A spokesperson for the Portuguese Prosecutor's Office stated that, so far, the identities of eight of the deceased have been confirmed. Among them are five Portuguese nationals, two South Koreans, and one Swiss national. Identification efforts for the remaining eight victims are still underway.
Earlier, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Lisbon city authorities announced that one South Korean is among the injured.
The accident occurred on September 3 on the Gloria Line tram, which connects Restauradores Square in downtown Lisbon to the Bairro Alto hilltop observatory. This tram is a popular tourist attraction, used by more than 3.5 million people each year.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro announced that 16 people died in the accident, and five of the injured who were transported to the hospital are in critical condition. He stated that government transportation experts, prosecutors, and police are jointly investigating the cause of the accident. The National Civil Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Agency will release a preliminary report on September 5 after completing its analysis of the wreckage.
