Sejong Chungnam National University Hospital announced on September 3 that it will hold the "Life Sharing Week Campaign" in the lobby on the first floor of the main building for two days starting from September 8.
This year marks the 8th Life Sharing Week, which is held annually during the second week of September in accordance with the Act on Organ Transplantation and Related Matters. The week is dedicated to honoring the spirit of love and sacrifice of organ and tissue donors and providing accurate information about proper organ donation.
The hospital plans to conduct a campaign for staff and visitors to register as organ and tissue donation hopefuls through guidance and counseling, and will also host a true-or-false quiz event to deliver accurate information about life sharing. In addition, until September 14, the hospital will display a notice on its website and post card news related to organ and tissue donation on its social media channels to actively promote Life Sharing Week.
According to the Korea Organ and Tissue Donation Agency, the number of patients waiting for transplants continues to rise due to the increasing incidence of chronic diseases and organ failure, with 43,182 people in 2020, 45,843 in 2021, 49,765 in 2022, and 51,857 in 2023. While public awareness of organ donation is high at 98.4%, the rates of interest (40.2%) and positive perception (63.3%) are relatively low, highlighting the need for improvement. Awareness of Life Sharing Week itself is also low at only 17.5%, making it urgent to raise its profile.
Hospital Director Park Jaehyung stated, "We will continue to honor the noble intentions of organ and tissue donors and work to expand both awareness and the values of life sharing and dignity so that the culture of donation can spread further. I hope that by providing more accurate information about organ donation, more people will take an interest in and participate in organ donation."
