Delivering Distinctive Customer Value with 4th Generation OLED Panels

On September 3, LG Display announced that its self-developed 4th generation organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel has been verified for 'Perfect Content Reproduction' under 500 lux lighting conditions by UL Solutions, a global safety science company.

This verification means that even at 500 lux-comparable to the brightness of a living room at midday-the panel can most accurately reproduce the video information of original content, including color and luminance. It demonstrates that content can be clearly delivered even in bright environments. LG Display's 4th generation OLED panel has been recognized for its ability to accurately reproduce more than 95% of the original video content in 4K resolution (approximately 8.3 million pixels).

With this achievement, LG Display's 4th generation OLED panel has become the industry's first to obtain all three verifications for 500 lux environments. Previously, at the end of last year, it received 'Perfect Black' and 'Perfect Color' verifications for 500 lux conditions from UL Solutions.

Because OLED is a self-emissive structure where each element emits light, it allows for precise control of brightness and color at the pixel level. As a result, it consistently maintains excellent picture quality despite changes in ambient brightness. The 4th generation OLED panel, featuring LG Display's advanced technology, incorporates an ultra-low reflection design that suppresses scattering and reflection of external light both on the panel surface and inside the panel, enabling it to display the creator's intended visuals without interference from external light.

This product delivers top-tier picture quality not only for HDR content, which offers cinematic-level visuals, but also for SDR content with picture quality typical of regular TV dramas. Unlike HDR content, which inherently has superior color and contrast, SDR content has a relatively narrow range of brightness and color, making the 'haze effect'-where the image appears foggy-more pronounced when viewed on an LCD panel. In contrast, LG Display's 4th generation OLED panel maximizes the contrast ratio of both HDR and SDR content based on perfect blacks, resulting in a vivid and lifelike picture.

Yoon Sooyoung, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of LG Display, stated, "Going forward, LG Display will continue to introduce premium displays that deliver the best viewing experience in various usage environments, based on our proprietary OLED technology."
