Mokpo City in South Jeolla Province has taken a significant step toward expanding the supply of clean energy.

On September 1, the city announced that it had signed a 300 billion won investment agreement for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with Honam BES, a subsidiary of the global infrastructure developer Equis.

Under the agreement, Honam BES will build a BESS with a capacity of 99MW (PCS)/700MWh on approximately 17,200 square meters of industrial land within Mokpo Daeyang Industrial Complex by next year. This facility will store electricity generated from renewable energy sources and supply it during peak demand hours, serving as a key infrastructure to enhance the stability of the power grid. The storage capacity of 700MWh is equivalent to the monthly electricity consumption of about 2,500 households in Mokpo.

Honam BES has already been selected as the preferred negotiator in the Korea Power Exchange's central contract market for energy storage systems (ESS), and plans to begin construction after completing various licensing and approval procedures. This system was introduced to address grid instability caused by the expansion of renewable energy.

Mokpo City expects that this project will not only ensure a stable power supply for the Daeyang Industrial Complex but also serve as a foundation for expanding clean energy supply in connection with offshore wind power in the southwestern region of South Jeolla Province.

A city official said, "Once the BESS is fully operational, Mokpo will play a pivotal role as a hub city for clean energy," adding, "We expect it will make a tangible contribution to the expansion of renewable energy and balanced regional development."
