Chungnam Hosts Carbon Neutrality International Conference: "Leading Carbon Neutrality in South Korea" Kim Taeheum, Governor of Chungnam Province

Chungnam Province has strengthened international solidarity by sharing carbon neutrality policies and experiences with local governments, corporations, and experts from around the world. Through this international conference, Chungnam declared its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045, even though half of the nation's coal-fired power plants are located in the province, highlighting its central role in South Korea's climate leadership.

On September 2, the province hosted the '9th Chungnam Carbon Neutrality International Conference' at the Boryeong Mud Theme Park Convention Center.

The event was attended by Kim Taeheum, Governor of Chungnam Province, Mike Peirce, Executive Director of the Climate Group, representatives from local governments in 11 countries including Indonesia, as well as officials from international organizations, corporations, and groups, totaling more than 1,500 participants.

Under the theme 'Transition to a Carbon Neutral Economy and Expanding Cooperation,' the conference, which runs until September 3, features presentations on climate crisis response cases by overseas local governments and the signing of the 'Geumgang Estuary Vegetation Re-born Project' agreement, a nationwide first initiative led by Chungnam.

During the corporate session, Hyundai Steel's 'HY3 Project' carbon reduction technology, Hyundai Motor Company's hydrogen-based transportation strategy, Samsung Display's renewable energy transition plan, and HD Hyundai Oilbank's eco-friendly fuel production plan were introduced.

Governor Kim Taeheum emphasized, "Chungnam is the region with the highest carbon emissions in the country, but we will achieve carbon neutrality by 2045," adding, "We are pursuing goals ahead of the central government, such as expanding renewable energy, enacting a special law to support regions phasing out coal-fired power, and reducing methane emissions by 35%."

He continued, "Carbon neutrality can only succeed if the central government, local governments, corporations, and citizens all participate together," and declared, "Chungnam will take the lead in driving South Korea's climate response."
