Gangjin County Achieves Total Fertility Rate of 1.61,
More Than Double the National Average,
According to Statistics Korea
Gangjin County in South Jeolla Province has ranked second nationwide in total fertility rate. According to last year's birth statistics released by Statistics Korea on September 9, Gangjin County's total fertility rate was 1.61, more than double the national average of 0.75. This achievement is drawing attention as it comes from a region facing the crisis of low birth rates and population decline.
In the second quarter of this year, South Jeolla Province recorded a total fertility rate of 1.04, ranking first nationwide. It was the only region in the country to exceed 1.0. Gangjin County has established itself as a key area, driving the rise in the overall birth rate in South Jeolla Province.
The core policy is the "Gangjin County Childcare Allowance." Implemented since October 2022, this program provides 600,000 won per month for up to 84 months to every newborn, regardless of birth order or household income. The total amount reaches 50.4 million won. Since its implementation, the number of newborns has increased by 84% over two years.
The county is pursuing policies that support residents throughout their entire lives, starting from the preparation stage for pregnancy, extending beyond childbirth and childrearing. In addition to support for infertility treatment, postpartum care, and medical expenses, Gangjin County is expanding childcare infrastructure such as childcare cafes within apartment complexes, nighttime care centers, and shared parenting spaces, creating a favorable environment for raising children.
