Hyundai Wia Unveils New Logistics Robots... Official Entry into the Mobile Robot Market

Hyundai Wia announced on September 1 that it has unveiled its new logistics robots, officially launching its entry into the mobile (autonomous) robot market.

On August 28 and 29, Hyundai Wia held the 'Logistics Robot New Product Launch and Customer Invitation Demonstration' at the Hyundai Wia Uiwang Research Center in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, where it introduced a logistics robot platform with a payload capacity (the maximum weight a robot can carry) ranging from 300 to 1,500 kilograms. Logistics robots refer to robots used in industrial settings to transport various manufacturing materials. With this new product launch, Hyundai Wia has established a lineup of logistics robots with payload capacities of 300, 600, 1,000, and 1,500 kilograms.

The new products have been developed to operate in various modes, allowing them to be optimized for different installation environments and operational purposes. First, the logistics robots are equipped with autonomous driving capabilities using the 'SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping)' method, which enables them to use LiDAR to check maps and their positions in real time. In addition, they can also operate using the 'AGV' method, which allows them to recognize QR codes or magnets on the floor and follow pre-set routes. Hyundai Wia aims to provide automated logistics solutions to customers through these three driving methods.

The efficiency of the logistics robots has also been improved by diversifying the types of onboard equipment used to carry goods. Customized solutions are provided using features such as conveyors for easy movement of items, lifts for adjusting the height of goods, and turntables for changing the direction of objects. This development takes into account the recent increase in production environments featuring small-lot manufacturing of various products.

Based on the launch of these new products, Hyundai Wia plans to expand its influence in the mobile robot market, including logistics robots and parking robots. In particular, the company intends to significantly broaden its customer base beyond Hyundai Motor Group to general customers. More than 100 companies attended the demonstration event and showed interest in the logistics and parking robots.

A Hyundai Wia representative stated, "This new product is more than just a simple transport device; it is an intelligent platform that can be organically integrated into customers' entire logistics systems. We will continue to develop technologies and optimize for field applications in response to the needs of a diverse range of domestic and international customers, thereby securing competitiveness in the mobile robot market."
