On September 1, Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Heeyoung) announced that it is actively moving forward with the development of the Yongsan Electronics Market area (15, Hangangno 2-ga) as a core future project, in connection with the Yongsan International Business District.

The Seoul City Urban Architecture Joint Committee recently approved with amendments the changes to the district unit plan and detailed development plans for Najin Shopping Center Buildings 15, 17, and 18, making concrete the blueprint for transforming this area into a hub for new industries based on artificial intelligence (AI) and information and communication technology (ICT).

According to this decision, Najin Shopping Center Building 15 will be developed as an eight-story underground and 21-story above-ground structure, with a total floor area of 27,627 square meters (floor area ratio of 949%). Buildings 17 and 18 will each have eight underground and 27 above-ground floors, totaling 155,367 square meters (floor area ratio of 975%). With the addition of office and neighborhood living facilities, the electronics market area, which has experienced years of stagnation, is expected to be reborn as a hub for advanced industries.

This project is being pursued alongside the development of the Yongsan International Business District, and a significant synergy effect is anticipated. The Yongsan International Business District is a large-scale project to create a "three-dimensional complex vertical city" on the Yongsan Station rail yard site, with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL), and Seoul Housing & Communities Corporation (SH) aiming to break ground on infrastructure within this year.

To foster the electronics market area as both a functional support zone for the international business district and a center for innovation in new industries, the district is working to designate it as the "Yongsan AI·ICT Content Industry Special Development Promotion District." After being selected as a candidate site in April, a dedicated team was established in July, and from September through June next year, a service to establish a promotion plan will be conducted.

In the second half of the year, the district will develop revitalization measures through resident participation and public discussion, and on November 19, it plans to discuss development strategies at the "Yongsan New Industry Policy Forum."

Park Heeyoung, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, stated, "The development of the Yongsan Electronics Market and the International Business District marks an important turning point for Yongsan's new leap forward," adding, "By strategically linking these two projects, we will develop Yongsan into a global innovation city leading future industries."
