Democratic Party Draws Clear Line on Prosecution Reform... "Swiftly Finalizing to Ensure No Disagreements"

The Democratic Party of Korea has decided to swiftly finalize a prosecution reform plan, which includes abolishing the Prosecutors' Office and separating investigation and indictment functions, in order to ensure there are no disagreements with the government.

On August 28, after group discussions at the party workshop held at Paradise City in Incheon, members of the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee from the Democratic Party made this announcement.

Kim Yongmin, the Democratic Party's secretary on the committee, stated during a briefing, "We discussed in the group session that the party and the government will thoroughly deliberate to ensure there are no differences of opinion regarding prosecution reform." He added, "In particular, Minister Chung made it clear that he will follow the discussions in the National Assembly." Kim emphasized, "We concluded that we will quickly create and process a unified proposal between the party and the government."

Additionally, in light of the court's decision the previous day to dismiss the arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Han, there was a consensus on the need to swiftly establish a special tribunal for insurrection cases.

Assemblyman Kim stated, "We find the dismissal of the arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Han to be completely incomprehensible and unacceptable." He continued, "Presiding Judge Ji Guyoun, who is handling the insurrection trial, is implicated in corruption allegations and therefore is unqualified to preside over this nationally significant case."

He added, "For this reason, we have resolved to promptly establish a special tribunal for insurrection cases." He argued, "All citizens expected former Prime Minister Han to be detained, and it is simply unacceptable that he was not. The court is not taking the insurrection case seriously."
