The KOSPI closed higher, supported by net buying from institutional investors.
On August 28, the KOSPI ended trading at 3,196.32, up 9.16 points (0.29%) from the previous day. The trading volume was approximately 308.98 million shares, and the provisional trading value was 9.5479 trillion won.
By investor type, institutions recorded a net purchase of 326.2 billion won, while foreign investors and individuals posted net sales of 24.2 billion won and 393.9 billion won, respectively. In the futures market, foreign investors were net buyers of 771 billion won, while institutions and individuals were net sellers of 526 billion won and 241.8 billion won, respectively. Program trading saw net sales of 49.9 billion won in arbitrage trading and 68.3 billion won in non-arbitrage trading.
Performance varied by sector. The securities sector rose by 3.98%, finance by 2.63%, insurance by 2.6%, food, beverage & tobacco by 1.39%, retail by 1.25%, paper & wood by 1.0%, non-metallic minerals by 0.67%, medical precision by 0.49%, construction by 0.48%, real estate by 0.46%, and transportation & storage by 0.3%. On the other hand, the entertainment & culture sector declined by 1.3%, metals by 0.71%, telecommunications by 0.55%, general services by 0.46%, IT services by 0.46%, and electrical & electronics by 0.42%.
Among the largest stocks by market capitalization, performance was mixed. Samsung Electronics fell by 1.42%, LG Energy Solution by 2.54%, Samsung Biologics by 0.78%, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries by 3.45%, and Doosan Enerbility by 0.32%. In contrast, SK Hynix rose by 3.27%, Hanwha Aerospace by 0.11%, Hyundai Motor by 0.91%, Kia by 2.13%, and KB Financial Group by 0.55%.
The number of advancing stocks was 483, while 383 stocks declined and 67 remained unchanged.
The KOSDAQ index closed lower due to net selling by institutions and foreign investors. The KOSDAQ ended trading at 798.43, down 3.29 points (0.41%) from the previous day. By investor type, institutions and foreign investors were net sellers of 20.3 billion won and 58.4 billion won, respectively, while individuals were net buyers of 87.9 billion won.
Most of the largest stocks by market capitalization on the KOSDAQ declined. Alteogen fell by 1.18%, Ecopro BM by 2.84%, Peptron by 0.94%, Ecopro by 4.55%, PharmaResearch by 2.84%, LIG ChemBio by 0.74%, Rainbow Robotics by 3.14%, and ABL Bio by 0.11%. Meanwhile, HLB rose by 0.67%, Samchundang Pharm by 0.98%, and Caregen by 4.9%.
Meanwhile, in the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won/dollar exchange rate is trading at 1,387.5 won, down 6.7 won from the previous day.
