Selected as a "Top 100 Innovative Technology" at the R&D 100 Awards
Joint Research with Johns Hopkins University Recognized for Next-Generation Peltier Cooling Technology
Samsung Electronics announced on August 24 that the research on "next-generation Peltier cooling technology," conducted in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, has been selected as one of the "Top 100 Innovative Technologies" at the "2025 R&D 100 Awards."
Established in 1963, the R&D 100 Awards are known as the "Oscars of Industry-Academic Innovation" and the "Nobel Prize of Engineering." Organized by the U.S. magazine "R&D World," the awards annually select the top 100 scientific and technological achievements that have contributed to advancements in science and technology.

R&D World Magazine explained that the award was given because the Samsung Research Life Solution Team and the Johns Hopkins University research team were the first in the world to use nanoengineering technology to newly develop a "high-performance thin-film Peltier semiconductor device" and successfully demonstrate a high-performance Peltier refrigerator utilizing this device.
The magazine also noted that by introducing a semiconductor thin-film deposition manufacturing process, the team improved cooling efficiency by approximately 75% compared to conventional refrigerants, while also achieving miniaturization and weight reduction. The related research paper was published in the renowned academic journal "Nature Communications" in May.
Peltier cooling technology is an eco-friendly, non-chemical next-generation cooling method that does not use refrigerants. Its ability to provide rapid and precise temperature control has drawn attention for potential applications in home appliances, semiconductors, medical devices, automotive electronics, and data centers. Lee Junhyun, Vice President of the Samsung Research Life Solution Team at Samsung Electronics, said, "It is a great honor to receive the globally prestigious 'R&D 100 Award,' which evaluates commercially viable scientific technologies. This recognition is especially meaningful as it acknowledges both the innovation and practicality of next-generation Peltier cooling technology."
