Two Cousin Haenyeo Divers in Their 70s Found Dead in Gijang, Busan Sea; Investigation Underway

Went Out to Collect Seafood, Found in Cardiac Arrest
Police Investigate with Multiple Possibilities in Mind

At around 10:10 a.m. on August 23, two haenyeo divers in their 70s were found in cardiac arrest in the sea near the eastern walking path of Ilgwang Beach in Ilgwang-eup, Gijang-gun, Busan.


The haenyeo, who were discovered and rescued by a staff member from a nearby leisure business, received emergency treatment such as CPR and were transported to the hospital, but ultimately passed away. According to the Ulsan Coast Guard, they were wearing haenyeo suits at the time of rescue and showed no apparent external injuries. Fishing gear used by the women was also found in the vicinity.

The women, who were local residents and cousins, reportedly went out to sea at around 7 a.m. that day with another haenyeo in her 70s, a member of the local haenyeo association, to collect seafood.


The other haenyeo, who had gone diving with them, was unaware of the incident and surfaced at around 11 a.m. that day.


The Ulsan Coast Guard is investigating the exact circumstances of the accident, keeping multiple possibilities open.
