Future-Oriented Relations to Be Emphasized in Joint Statement
Leaders to Reaffirm Historical Perceptions and Expand Economic Security Cooperation
Japanese local media reported on August 23 that President Lee Jae Myung and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba are expected to include terms such as "future-oriented development of relations" in a joint statement following their summit, which will be presented in the form of a joint press announcement.
According to a report by the Yomiuri Shimbun citing multiple officials, the final version of the joint statement, which is currently being coordinated, will state that "the leaders of both countries will develop bilateral relations in a stable and future-oriented manner based on the foundation built over 60 years since the normalization of diplomatic ties."

In addition, regarding historical issues, the Japanese side is expected to reaffirm the succession of historical perceptions demonstrated by previous cabinets, including the 1998 Kim Dae Jung-Obuchi Joint Declaration, which included reflection and apology for colonial rule. The statement will also cover the activation of "shuttle diplomacy" between the two leaders, as well as Korea-Japan and Korea-U.S.-Japan security cooperation.
Furthermore, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported that cooperation in economic security, such as the dissemination of hydrogen and clean energy and the establishment of strategic material supply chains, is also expected to be mentioned.
