Collapsed During Weed Removal Work
Police to Determine Cause of Death Through Autopsy
An elderly man in his 80s who was participating in a public work program in Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province, has died, and police are investigating the circumstances of his death.
According to the Gwangyang Police Station on August 14, a report was received at around 8:45 a.m. the previous day that a man in his 80s, identified as Mr. A, had collapsed in a parking lot near a hospital in Gwangyang. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead.
At the time, Mr. A was engaged in weed removal work as part of a public work program operated by the local government. The work reportedly began at 7:00 a.m. to avoid the extreme heat. At 8:00 a.m., when Mr. A collapsed, the temperature was 26.3 degrees Celsius, and the apparent temperature was 29.7 degrees Celsius.
Taking these factors into account, the police believe the possibility of a heat-related illness is low and plan to determine the exact cause of death through an autopsy.
