Hanwha Systems, SK Siltron, and Toray Advanced Materials Lead the Rankings
Average Operating Margin Stands at 7.6%
The total sales of the top 100 companies headquartered in Gumi, Gyeongbuk in 2024 amounted to 17.6257 trillion won.
This figure represents an 8.6% increase from the previous year and accounts for 36.6% of the total production value of the Gumi National Industrial Complex (48.1417 trillion won), reaffirming the pivotal role these companies play in the local economy.
According to an analysis by the Gyeongbuk (Gumi) Chamber of Commerce and Industry, based on data from NICE Information Service Co., Ltd. and the Financial Supervisory Service's electronic disclosure system (separate statements of comprehensive income), 67 out of the top 100 companies saw an increase in sales compared to the previous year, while 30 companies experienced a decrease. Three companies were newly established this year, making year-on-year comparisons impossible for them.
◆ Top Companies by Sales and Operating Profit
Hanwha Systems Co., Ltd. ranked first in sales with 2.7936 trillion won, followed by SK Siltron Co., Ltd. with 2.0923 trillion won, and Toray Advanced Materials Korea Inc. with 2.0765 trillion won.
In terms of operating profit, SK Siltron led with 423.3 billion won (an operating margin of 20.2%), followed by Hanwha Systems with 225.1 billion won (8.1%), and PNT Co., Ltd. with 170.7 billion won (17.3%). Out of the top 100 companies, 85 reported profits, with an average operating margin of 7.6%.
◆ Distribution by Sales Size and Industry
By sales size, the largest group consisted of companies with sales between 50 billion and 100 billion won, totaling 40 companies. There were 31 companies with sales below 50 billion won, 22 companies with sales between 100 billion and 500 billion won, 4 companies between 500 billion and 1 trillion won, and 3 companies with sales exceeding 1 trillion won.
By industry, manufacturing overwhelmingly dominated with 81 companies. Within manufacturing, there were 32 in electrical and electronics, 30 in machinery and metals, 13 in textiles and chemicals, and 6 in other manufacturing sectors. In addition, there were 8 companies in construction and civil engineering, 4 in distribution and services, and 3 in real estate.
◆ Employment and Company Size
The top 100 companies employed a total of 29,180 people, accounting for 35.8% of all workers (81,494) in the Gumi National Industrial Complex. By employment size, companies with 100 to 300 employees were the most common, totaling 41.
By company size, there were 65 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), 28 mid-sized companies, and 7 large enterprises. Among them, two companies-Hanwha Systems and Ajou Steel-were listed on the KOSPI, 16 were listed on the KOSDAQ, and the remaining 82 were unlisted.
◆ High Proportion of Long-standing Companies
There were 64 companies with more than 20 years of business history, demonstrating the stability of the region's manufacturing base. Of these, 21 companies had been in business for over 30 years. In contrast, there were 7 newly established companies with less than 5 years of history.
Shim Gojung, head of the Economic Research Team at the Gumi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated, "More than two-thirds of companies headquartered in Gumi have over 20 years of business experience and are growing through continuous investment. To overcome uncertainties such as the deterioration of the global trade environment, comprehensive government support for research and development (R&D) infrastructure and balanced development strategies are necessary. Companies must leverage this foundation to secure a technological edge."
