On August 8, Daemyeong 9-dong in Nam-gu, Daegu (headed by Park Hyunjung) discovered a 32-year-old woman, referred to as Ms. A, who had been living a reclusive life in a house filled with trash during a heatwave. As of August 12, the local office announced that it is supporting her independence by providing assistance with housing, employment, and welfare services.
Ms. A, a resident of Daemyeong 9-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu, had lived alone for several years, completely cut off from society, and had been leading an unstable life without a steady job. In particular, she had been unable to pay rent for over seven months, which led to escalating conflicts with her landlord. The interior of her home was so cluttered with piles of trash that there was barely any space to step.
In response, the Daemyeong 9-dong office in Nam-gu carried out an emergency intervention for households in crisis, cleaning Ms. A's residence and providing educational support to help her participate in self-sufficiency work programs. They are also facilitating her move to public rental housing. Since Ms. A has no stable income, she is receiving emergency living expense support and, having been designated as a recipient of customized integrated case management, will continue to receive ongoing and intensive care in the future.
Although the conflict with the landlord over unpaid rent and property management had become severe, continuous persuasion and mediation by welfare officials led to the landlord's cooperation, allowing Ms. A to remain in her current residence and prepare for a stable move to public housing.
Additionally, the landlord agreed to participate in the Safe Housing Project, which is being implemented for the first time in Daemyeong 9-dong. Through this initiative, the landlord will take part in activities to check on and show concern for single-person households renting the property.
Park Hyunjung, head of Daemyeong 9-dong, stated, "It is highly significant that the local community was able to discover and rescue a reclusive young person who had been living among piles of trash during the heatwave," and added, "We will continue to expand community-based preventive welfare models like the Safe Housing Project in Daemyeong 9-dong, so that we can protect isolated neighbors together."
