According to the Guardian on August 10 (local time), Thompson shared at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, which opened on August 6, that she received a date proposal from President Trump on the very day her divorce was finalized while filming the 1998 movie "Primary Colors."

Thompson said, "I was in my trailer getting ready for filming when the phone rang. I heard a voice say, 'This is Donald Trump,' and I thought it was a joke," adding, "He suggested, 'Come to one of my beautiful mansions and have dinner with me.' I replied, 'Thank you very much. I'll think about it.'

At the time, President Trump had just finalized his divorce from his second wife, Marla Maples, and Thompson had also just completed divorce proceedings with director and actor Kenneth Branagh.

Thompson remarked, "I only realized later that my divorce decree had come out that day. Maybe he was looking for a newly divorced woman," and joked, "I have no idea how he got my trailer phone number. It was almost stalking."

A lifelong supporter of the Labour Party, Thompson has been actively involved in environmental activism and refugee and women's rights movements. She laughed, saying, "If I had gone on a date with Trump back then, I might have changed the course of American history."

Thompson is also well known in Korea for her roles as Professor Trelawney in the "Harry Potter" series and in the film "Love Actually" (2003). She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for "Howards End" (1993) and the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for "Sense and Sensibility" (1996).
