SNS Preferences Split Between Instagram and Band
ChatGPT Tops AI App Usage Across All Generations
The most frequently used mobile applications on smartphones vary by generation.
According to Mobile Index by IGAWorks on August 10, an analysis of mobile app usage by generation last month showed that YouTube was the most used app among people in their teens, twenties, and thirties. For those in their forties, fifties, and sixties and older, KakaoTalk had the highest usage.
More specifically, among those aged ten and under, the most frequently used apps after YouTube were Google Chrome, KakaoTalk, Naver, and the Google app, in that order. For people in their twenties, the ranking was YouTube, KakaoTalk, Naver, Google, and Google Chrome. For those in their thirties, the order was YouTube, Naver, KakaoTalk, Google, and Google Chrome. In all age groups over forty, YouTube and Naver ranked second and third. This trend has continued throughout the first half of this year.
There were also clear generational differences in the use of social networking services (SNS). From the beginning of this year through last month, Instagram was the most used SNS among those aged ten and under, as well as those in their twenties and thirties. In contrast, Naver Band ranked first among people in their forties and older. The second most popular SNS by generation was X (formerly Twitter) for those aged ten and under and those in their twenties, Band for those in their thirties, and Instagram for those in their forties and older.
For artificial intelligence (AI) apps, OpenAI's ChatGPT ranked first across all generations. Among those aged ten and under, RyuTen was the second most used, while from the twenties and older, SK Telecom's A.Dot was the second most used after ChatGPT. For the third most used AI app, Perplexity ranked third among those in their teens to thirties, while RyuTen ranked third among those in their forties and older.
There were also clear differences in mobile app usage by gender.
For men, YouTube was the most used app up to their thirties, while KakaoTalk was most used among those in their forties and older, similar to the overall rankings. For women, YouTube was the most used app in all age groups except for those in their forties. Among women in their forties, Naver was the most used. Naver ranked second among women in their teens to thirties, while YouTube was second among those in their forties. For women in their fifties and sixties, KakaoTalk was the second most used app.
