Eligibility Expanded to Families with Two or More Children
Number of Supported Households Increased from 200 to 400 per Month
On August 5, Gwangju City announced that it will expand the 'Grandchild Family Caregiver Support Project,' which was the first of its kind in the nation, starting from August.
This project aims to alleviate the childcare burden on dual-income and multi-child families by providing a caregiving allowance to grandparents or relatives within the fourth degree of kinship who care for preschool children (aged six or younger).
The city has significantly expanded both the eligibility criteria for support and the range of caregivers by revising the 'Ordinance on Childbirth and Childcare Support' and through consultation with the Ministry of Health and Welfare regarding social security. Previously, support was only available to dual-income families with twins or three or more children, but now families with two or more children are also eligible to apply.
Additionally, by investing a total project budget of 800 million won, the number of supported households has doubled from 200 to 400. It is expected that this will enable more families to establish a stable caregiving environment. Applications and detailed information about the project can be found on the 'Gwangju Aikium' platform or through the Gwangju City Women's Association Council.
Lee Youngdong, Director of the Women and Family Bureau, stated, "This expansion marks the beginning of a new care policy that provides public support to family caregivers," and added, "We will spare no effort to make Gwangju a city where it is good to give birth and raise children, and where every family can be happy."
