Gimhae, Miryang, and Yangsan in Eastern Gyeongnam to Become Hubs for Six Advanced Industries

Future Mobility, Smart Logistics, Biomedical, Hydrogen, Nano Convergence, and Startups

Gyeongsangnam-do will foster the eastern region, including Gimhae, Yangsan, and Miryang, as advanced industrial hubs by applying artificial intelligence (AI) technology to new industries.

On August 4, Gyeongsangnam-do announced its strategy to foster advanced industries in Eastern Gyeongnam, focusing on six key sectors: future mobility, smart logistics, biomedical, hydrogen, nano convergence, and startups, at the provincial government press center.

The province explained that it designated these six advanced industries based on several factors: its excellent logistics infrastructure due to proximity to Gadeokdo New Airport and Jinhae New Port; the presence of the Nano Convergence National Industrial Complex, the Medical Device Specialized Zone, and the Future Automobile Cluster; and the high concentration of automotive parts and bio companies in the region.

Kim Myungjoo, Vice Governor for Administrative Affairs, who led the announcement, stated, "By 2034, we will invest 5.7072 trillion won in 112 projects across the six sectors, aiming to increase the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of the eastern region to 41.4 trillion won by 2034."

He also said, "Over the next 10 years, we will nurture more than 20 additional anchor companies and foster 1,000 technology-based venture companies to create an industrial ecosystem where young people choose to stay."

Furthermore, he stated, "We aim to see leading unicorn companies emerge in mobility in Gimhae, biomedical in Yangsan, and hydrogen in Miryang, and to make Eastern Gyeongnam the logistics forward base of Korea, serving as the starting point for the continental railway and the Arctic shipping route."

To achieve this, Gyeongsangnam-do established the 'Eastern Gyeongnam Industrial Development Council' and, since June last year, has worked with the three cities, Gyeongnam Technopark, Gyeongnam Research Institute, and the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade to develop the advanced industry strategy for Eastern Gyeongnam.

The core of the strategy is not competition among individual local governments, but rather linking and cooperating based on each region's strengths to promote six major sectors and 15 key tasks for AI convergence, advanced industry development, and startup promotion. The key tasks encompass 112 detailed projects.

The six major sectors are: ▲ fostering future mobility based on digital technology ▲ innovating smart logistics through AI convergence ▲ establishing a biomedical industry-academia-hospital triangle ▲ leading the hydrogen economy in preparation for the carbon-free energy era ▲ driving future advanced industries with nano convergence composite materials ▲ creating startup hubs and revitalizing venture investment.

The province will support the transformation of internal combustion engine-focused automotive parts companies into future vehicle parts companies, such as electric, hydrogen, and autonomous vehicles, centered around the Gimhae Future Automobile Cluster.

With Gimhae's logistics, robotics, and semiconductor convergence hub at the center, the province plans to establish a state-of-the-art logistics system in line with the creation of an air-sea-land triport connecting Gadeokdo New Airport and Jinhae New Port.

Additionally, by leveraging Yangsan Busan National University Hospital and Inje University Paik Hospital, the province will establish Yangsan as a biomedical industry innovation hub, linking companies, universities, and hospitals.

Moreover, the hydrogen ecosystem will be expanded to Changwon, Miryang, and Gimhae to foster high-value-added hydrogen companies, and a hydrogen-specialized complex will be established in Miryang.

A hub for the commercialization of advanced nano composite materials will be established in Miryang, applying high-performance nano materials to finished products in aerospace, defense, energy, and future mobility, thereby advancing related industries.

Vice Governor Kim stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure that this development strategy is not just a blueprint but is actually implemented to produce tangible results, including reflecting it in national policy tasks, securing budgets, selecting for public projects, and supporting startups."

He added, "Through fostering AI convergence advanced industries, we will attract young people to Gyeongnam and, in connection with special education zones and glocal universities, will also focus on nurturing AI experts and advanced industry talent."

Finally, he said, "For the overall development of Gyeongnam, we will also prepare and announce, as soon as they are ready, regional development plans covering all sectors, including not only industry but also transportation and tourism."
