As air conditioner usage surges during the heatwave, the number of outdoor unit fires is also increasing, highlighting the need for regular inspections and maintenance.

Recently, the Seoul Fire Department posted a video on YouTube titled "Essential Fire Prevention Rules for Summer," providing guidance on how to inspect outdoor units.

According to the National Fire Agency, 80% of the 1,234 outdoor air conditioner unit fires that occurred between 2018 and 2022 were caused by problems with the unit's wiring.

Outdoor units are typically installed outside, making them vulnerable to direct exposure to dust and sunlight. When accumulated dust comes into contact with the wiring, it can cause sparks, and if the overheated air cannot dissipate, this can ultimately lead to a fire.

Outdoor units should be cleaned with high-pressure water or specialized equipment at least once every three years. Since air conditioners are usually only used in the summer, damaged wiring can easily be neglected, making preemptive inspections essential.

Additionally, using a multi-tap with a low capacity increases the risk of fire due to overloading. Air conditioners should always be plugged into a dedicated outlet, and the wiring should be thoroughly checked in advance for any damage.

It is also important to keep the area around the outdoor unit clean. Flammable materials such as cigarette butts near the unit can be a source of fire, and items stacked on top of the unit can block ventilation, causing heat to build up.

Outdoor units should be installed at least 10 centimeters away from the wall, and the surrounding area should be kept tidy at all times to ensure safety.

In particular, products that use eco-friendly refrigerants contain flammable gases, which can cause a fire to spread rapidly if one occurs. Therefore, extra caution is needed when managing both the outdoor unit and its piping.

The Seoul Fire Department emphasized, "The main causes are short circuits at wiring connections, leaving flammable materials around the outdoor unit, and overheating due to excessive use," adding, "Even a small amount of attention and inspection can prevent major fires during the summer."
