Spotlight on Research Integrating Regionalism and Regenerative Architecture
"Paper Standing at the Intersection of Science, Technology, and Architecture"
Dong-A University (President Lee Haeu) announced on the 18th that Professor Sung Yong of the Department of Architecture has been selected as a recipient of the '2025 35th Science and Technology Outstanding Paper Award' hosted by the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies.
The award ceremony was held on the 10th at the Seoul Science and Technology Convention Center during the '2025 World Korean Scientists and Engineers Convention.' The Outstanding Paper Award from the Federation is one of Korea's leading science and technology awards and is presented annually to researchers who have contributed to academic advancement through creative research.
The Federation selects a total of 30 papers in natural sciences, 90 in engineering, 37 in agricultural and fisheries sciences, 59 in health sciences, and 29 in general studies through recommendations from member societies, and presents the Federation President's Award to the recipients.
Professor Sung Yong received the honor for his paper, "The Regenerative Characteristics of Diebedo Francis Kere's Architecture Examined from Steve A. Moore's Perspective on Regenerative Regionalism," published in the KIEAE Journal of the Korean Institute of Ecological Architecture and Environment.
This paper analyzes how the immaterial elements of architecture?such as sense of place and social value?are embodied within the new theoretical framework of 'regenerative regionalism,' focusing on the works of African architect Diebedo Francis Kere. It has been noted for highlighting the evolution and sustainability of regionalist architecture as a way to overcome the limitations of the international style.
Professor Sung Yong stated, "In architecture as well, the intersection with science and technology is becoming increasingly important amid new currents of change," and added, "I am grateful for the recognition of my research in the field of architecture with a science and technology award."
Since 2012, Professor Sung Yong has published more than 50 papers in the fields of architectural planning and design, actively engaging in research. His accolades include the Academic Award from the Korean Institute of Ecological Architecture and Environment (2020), the Outstanding Paper Award at the International Academic Conference (2021), the Grand Prize for Best Paper from the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam Branch of the Architectural Institute of Korea (2023), and the Muae (Lee Gwangno) Architecture Award (2023), among others.
A Dong-A University official commented, "This is a meaningful case where a paper incorporating both performance-based academic research and philosophical and social approaches has been recognized," and added, "It will serve as a good example of interdisciplinary convergence research."
