Promoting K-Taekwondo and Korean Wave Worldwide through Consecutive Activities in the United States

Dongmyung University (President Lee Sangcheon) is expanding its practical education projects, rooted in the founding philosophy of "pragmatism," from the local and national level to the global stage.

Through practice-oriented curricula such as the Product Development Semester System and the three-semester Co-Op education program, Dongmyung University provides students with on-site capabilities, delivers innovation to local businesses, and contributes to sustainable development in the local community.

Focusing on strategic industries in Busan such as future mobility, digital technology, and beauty·companion animals, the university has established an open collaboration system between industry and academia (Open UIC), and continues to drive innovation by organically connecting practical education with industrial sites.

The university has also achieved notable results in internationalization. In the 2026 QS World University Rankings announced by global university ranking agency QS, Dongmyung University was the only domestic university to newly enter the rankings (1401+). In the 2024 QS Stars evaluation, it also received the highest 5-star (5Stars) rating. These achievements are seen as evidence of its growth into a world-class educational institution beyond its regional base.

Major projects are also becoming visible one after another. The "Busan Green Startup Town," which is being established on the Dongmyung University campus, has a project budget of 29 billion KRW and aims for completion in March 2027. It is expected to become a hub for fostering local innovative startups and building a startup ecosystem. As a global startup hub in the eco-friendly and digital sectors, it will also contribute to balanced national development.

The "University Animal Hospital" is also scheduled for completion in June 2027. Dongmyung University's Companion Animal College offers programs such as Companion Animal Health, Pet Grooming and Behavior Correction, and the Companion Animal Industry Department (Pet Food Major·Industrial Design Major). In collaboration with Busan Metropolitan City and Gyeongsang National University, the university is working to foster the companion animal industry in the southeastern region and establish a biomedical hub. This is attracting attention as a model for ultra-wide-area collaboration involving metropolitan governments, national universities, and private universities.

K-sports is also making its mark on the global stage. Eighteen students from the university's Taekwondo Department are participating in international Taekwondo events in the United States, actively serving as cultural diplomats. They are raising the profile of K-Taekwondo by taking part in the LA World Taekwondo Hanmadang International Competition and the opening ceremony of the Houston Korea-US Taekwondo Tournament, which run through July 29. Previously, in 2022, they performed at an NFL stadium in the United States and at the Korea-Japan Friendship Festival in Fukuoka, Japan.

President Lee Sangcheon emphasized, "Dongmyung University is a prestigious institution for traditional employment and entrepreneurship, and the university will contribute to the local community, the nation, and even the world." He added, "This continues the entrepreneurial spirit and the values of challenge, creativity, and service of the university's founding company, Dongmyung Lumber, established by the late Dr. Kang Seokjin."

The late Dr. Kang is recognized as a business leader who led his company to become the nation's top exporter for seven consecutive years, spearheaded the establishment of Busan Bank and Busan Investment Finance, and served as president of the Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and BBS. He is regarded as a key figure in Korea's export growth, industrialization, and social contribution.
