Jungnang-gu Strengthens Separate Disposal of Waste Plastic Wrap... Dedicated Bags Provided to Over 1,500 Stores in Traditional Markets

On July 17, Jungnang-gu in Seoul (District Mayor Ryu Gyeonggi) announced that it has designated approximately 1,500 stores in traditional markets and local commercial districts as focused management zones to promote the separate disposal of waste plastic wrap. The district has also begun systematic management, including the distribution of dedicated plastic wrap bags and guidance on proper disposal methods.

Although waste plastic wrap is recyclable, a lack of awareness about separate disposal has led to it being mixed with general waste bags and subsequently incinerated or landfilled. This issue has persisted. In particular, the amount of waste plastic wrap generated in traditional markets and commercial areas is higher than in households, making systematic management necessary.

The district has deployed resource managers from the Jungnang Senior Club to visit stores directly, check the status of waste plastic wrap disposal, and provide guidance on proper disposal methods. A total of 1,524 stores, including 13 traditional markets and alley-type shopping districts, are subject to focused management.

In addition, the district has produced dedicated plastic wrap bags and has been providing them since June until supplies run out. Residents who purchase a bundle of 10 general waste bags, either 20 liters or 75 liters in size, receive a dedicated plastic wrap bag together with their purchase.

Waste plastic wrap should be collected separately using the provided dedicated bags or transparent/semi-transparent plastic bags. Items subject to separate disposal include plastic bags used for general waste storage, plastic bags with stickers attached, snack and coffee packaging plastic, plastic gloves, food ingredient packaging plastic, colored plastic bags, thermal/cooling packs, and onion nets.

If the plastic wrap is contaminated, the contents should be emptied or any solids should be rinsed with water before disposal. However, plastic wrap used for food packaging is not recyclable and should continue to be disposed of in general waste bags as before.

Ryu Gyeonggi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, stated, "The separate disposal of waste plastic wrap is key to a virtuous cycle of resources," and added, "I urge residents to actively participate, and we will continue to pursue resource circulation policies for a cleaner Jungnang."
