Jeonnam Province and the Jeonnam Provincial Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Science are launching a full-scale, field-oriented disaster response plan for the summer, ranging from establishing a proactive response system to recovery efforts, in order to minimize damage caused by high water temperatures and red tides.
This year, the rainy season is expected to be short and the heat wave to arrive quickly, raising the likelihood that high water temperatures will occur earlier than usual. As a result, thorough preparation is required.
In response, starting as early as April?earlier than last year?Jeonnam Province conducted pre-inspections of 3,318 aquaculture farms in the province and took immediate action to address any deficiencies. The province also actively encouraged farmers to report fish stocking and to enroll in disaster insurance, providing on-site guidance to ensure rapid recovery in the event of damage.
Notably, in June, Jeonnam Province was the only local government in the country to conduct a joint high water temperature and red tide simulation drill in the waters off Nam-myeon, Yeosu, with the participation of more than 100 people from the public sector, private sector, and police, further strengthening practical response capabilities.
In the event that a high water temperature or red tide advisory is issued, Jeonnam Province plans to immediately activate its integrated situation room and deploy on-site response teams to areas at risk, maintaining a constant emergency response system.
In addition, the province is making every effort to build up preventive equipment by supporting a budget of 46.2 billion KRW for six projects across 14 cities and counties, providing 11,466 units of equipment such as oxygen suppliers and circulation pumps, 6,300 tons of liquid oxygen, and 463 tons of immune boosters.
Park Youngchae, Director of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries for Jeonnam Province, stated, "We will mobilize all available resources to minimize damage from high water temperatures and red tides this summer," and urged, "When a high water temperature or red tide advisory is issued, aquaculture farms should also do their utmost in on-site management, including suspending feed supply."
Last year, Jeonnam Province suffered damages amounting to 57.4 billion KRW in 990 aquaculture farms across 10 cities and counties, including Yeosu and Goheung, due to high water temperatures.
