Gwangju and Jeonnam Industrial Production Rises... Consumption Declines

Simultaneous Rise in Light Industry Production and Shipments
Sales Value Index at Department Stores and Discount Stores Both Decline

In the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions, both the production and shipment of light industry increased compared to the same month last year, but sales at large retail stores declined simultaneously.

According to the "May Gwangju and Jeonnam Industrial Activity Trends" released by the Honam Regional Statistics Office on June 30, light industry production in Gwangju increased by 9.1% compared to the same month last year. Production increased in electrical equipment (45.3%), tobacco (67.6%), and electronics and communications (38.8%), while it decreased in rubber and plastics (-26.5%), fabricated metals (-28.9%), and machinery and equipment (-5.6%).

During the same period, shipments of light industry in Gwangju rose by 5.8%. Shipments increased in electrical equipment (63.0%), electronics and communications (26.3%), and tobacco (90.3%), while they decreased in fabricated metals (-29.3%), rubber and plastics (-17.4%), and primary metals (-21.7%). The sales value index at large retail stores was 101.0, a decrease of 4.1% compared to the same month last year. Department store sales increased by 0.1%, but large discount stores declined by 9.7%.

A similar trend was observed in Jeonnam. In May, light industry production increased by 0.7% compared to the same month last year. Production increased in primary metals (9.2%), electricity and gas (8.0%), and machinery and equipment (12.2%), while it decreased in chemical products (-3.0%), electrical equipment (-50.7%), and non-metallic minerals (-12.0%).

Shipments of light industry in Jeonnam increased by 3.6%, with shipments rising in chemical products (8.2%), electricity and gas (11.2%), and fabricated metals (10.5%). On the other hand, shipments decreased in petroleum refining (-1.0%), food products (-4.2%), and non-metallic minerals (-7.3%).
