IBM's artificial intelligence (AI) technology has joined the Wimbledon tennis tournament. The aim is to provide hundreds of millions of fans around the world with a more vivid and immersive online viewing experience of the Wimbledon tournament.
On June 29, IBM and the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), the organizer of Wimbledon, unveiled newly enhanced AI-powered digital features. A new "Match Chat" feature has been introduced, allowing fans to type questions in real time during matches and receive instant answers from AI. The previously available "Winning Probability Prediction" feature has also been upgraded, enabling users to check how the probability of winning changes as the match progresses.
These features are powered by generative AI technology based on match data within IBM's watsonx platform.
First, Match Chat is available on the Wimbledon mobile application and the official website. Fans can either select from preset phrases or type their own questions to interact with the AI. For example, they can ask, "Which player has converted more break points in this match?" or "Who is performing better in the match?"
Through the AI's real-time responses and analysis, fans are expected to gain insights into the match situation and enjoy an enhanced viewing experience.
Match Chat is built on watsonx Orchestrate, utilizing a large language model (LLM) and multiple AI agents trained specifically for Wimbledon's editorial style and tennis terminology.
The strengthened Winning Probability Prediction feature provides forecasts by having the AI comprehensively analyze various factors, including player statistics, expert opinions, and the flow of the match.
All these features are accessible via IBM SlamTracker and are available on both the Wimbledon app and the official website.

The 2025 Wimbledon tennis tournament will be held from June 30 to July 13.
